Mazda will unveil a Club edition of the 2016 MX-5 Miata next week at the New York auto show. The automaker gave no details on the new model except that it "represents the most aggressive road-going iteration" of the new Miata.

Research

The last Club trim on the outgoing model added Bilstein shocks, a specially tuned suspension, strut tower brace, limited-slip differential, and stickier summer tires. The standard 2016 Mazda Miata already benefits from a weight reduction compared to the model it replaces, losing around 150 pounds to 2332 pounds with the manual and 2381 pounds with the automatic. The U.S.-spec model will also sport a 2.0-liter Skyactiv engine making 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. Though that's less powerful than the outgoing Miata, and 150 pounds isn't as much as the Japanese-spec model's reduction of 220 pounds, the 2016 Mazda Miata could be the best one since the first-gen roadster thanks to dimensions closer to the original. In fact, the 2016 Miata is 1.4 inches shorter than the NA-chassis Miata, though it's 2.2 inches wider.

The 2016 Miata is "designed to deliver maximum driving enjoyment," and Mazda says the Club model "aims to amplify that experience." We'll find out exactly what the Japanese automaker has in store when the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club debuts next week in New York.
