The first prototype for the redesigned 2016 Nissan Maxima has been spotted. Despite being almost entirely covered in camouflage, the prototype confirms the new flagship sedan’s styling is influenced by the Nissan Sport Sedan concept that bowed this year in Detroit.

Although not as dramatic as the concept, the Nissan Maxima prototype has the automaker’s new aggressive boomerang headlights and new signature V-shaped grille. The current model ’s slab sides are replaced by the Nissan Sport Sedan concept’s dramatic fender arches and side body lines. The C-pillar also has a faster rake compared to the current car. Around back, the boomerang lighting design carries over to the taillights.

While the Nissan Sport Sedan concept featured a 300-hp 3.5-liter V-6 and CVT, the production model could offer a range of powertrains including a sporty hybrid variant that would differentiate it from the Nissan Altima, which is expected to get a more economy-oriented hybrid setup. The Maxima’s sport hybrid powertrain could consist of a supercharged and direct-injected 2.5-liter I-4 mated to an electric motor. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine is also possible.
