Vehicle Summary

The Ram 2500 Heavy Duty slots above the light-duty Ram 1500 and below the Ram 3500 Heavy Duty pickups.

Overview

Power for the Ram 2500 comes from a choice of Hemi V-8 gas engines or a Cummins turbodiesel I-6 in two power levels. The base engine is a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 rated 383 hp at 5,600 rpm and 400 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. An optional 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 makes 410 hp at 5,600 rpm and 429 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm. Both engines are mated to a 66RFE six-speed automatic transmission.

The available 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel makes 350 hp at 2,800 rpm and 660 lb-ft at 1,400 rpm when mated to the G56 six-speed manual transmission and 370 hp at 2,800 rpm and 800 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm when backed by the 66RFE six-speed automatic.

Body styles include Regular Cab with 8-foot box, Crew Cab with 6-foot-4-inch or 8-foot box, and Mega Cab with 6-foot-4-inch box. Maximum payload is rated up to 3,990 pounds, andtowing is rated up to 17,980 pounds depending on configuration.

The Ram 2500 is available in two- or four-wheel drive and in 10 trims including the base Tradesman work truck, Tradesman Power Wagon, SLT, Big Horn/Lone Star, Outdoorsman, Power Wagon, Laramie Crew/Mega, Laramie Power Wagon, Laramie Longhorn, and luxurious Laramie Limited.

Safety

Standard safety equipment includes front, side and side-curtain airbags, cargo view camera, Electronic Stability Control inclining brake assist, electronic roll mitigation, Hill-start Assist, rainy day braking, ready alert braking, traction control and trailer sway control, and an electronic trailer-brake controller. Optional safety features include ParkSense rear park assist with rearview camera, ParkView rear backup camera in rearview mirror, and a DOT safety kit.

What We Think

"Through and through, the Ram Power Wagon remains a fun pickup that will find its way into fleets that need off-roading abilities (think Border Patrol) to regular folk who just want to have a truck that can do just about anything. (Think annoying neighbor who likes to rev stuff in his garage all day.)," we said in our 2014 Ram 2500 Power Wagon First Drive.

"Through the years, the Power Wagon has proven its worth day in and day out. It's not so much about heritage as it is outright toughness. This pickup is one of the toughest around," we concluded.

After our 2016 Ram Truck and Van Full Line Review we said: "While waiting for my turn in the Ram 3500 HD with the heaviest load, I drove a pair of Ram 2500 HD pickups with a Cummins making 370 hp and 800 lb-ft mated to a six-speed automatic. The first was a four-wheel-drive Ram 2500 HD Laramie Limited Crew Cab. The Ram 3500 HD models featured leaf spring suspensions with optional air assist, but this 2500 HD used a five-link rear suspension. Our tester was equipped with the available air suspension, a power moonroof, and the RamBox. Max payload for a Ram 2500 HD is rated at 17,980 pounds. Our 2500 HD Crew Cab was towing an enclosed trailer loaded with rubber mats, bringing total trailer weight to 12,325 pounds and GCWR to 21,490 pounds. Although the Ram 2500 HD had no problem towing the load, the unevenly distributed weight did cause some trailer sway at speed.

"The second three-quarter ton was a base two-wheel-drive Ram 2500 HD Tradesman without the air suspension. This truck was loaded down with 2,600 pounds of rubber mats in the bed and without a trailer. Total vehicle weight was 10,000 pounds. With approximately 5,800 pounds over the rear axle, the Ram 2500 HD rode smoothly and accelerated much quicker than the trucks pulling trailers."

Cool Fact

The Ram 2500 HD (and 3500 HD) gained a rear five-link coil suspension and available air suspension in 2014. Most competitors still use rear leaf spring suspensions,
