It wasn't too long ago that the German automakers spread out into nearly every segment in the market as global sales soared. But with slowing sales in large markets like China and the Middle East, these automakers need to cut costs, which means that model proliferation is all but stopping, and each model in the lineup needs to be justifiable.

2017 Audi A7 Will be Lower and Wider, Offer 575 HP in RS 7 Trim

With the replacement for the current Audi A7 on its way, Audi had to find a way to not only separate the model from its smaller, less expensive A6 sibling, but give it a more distinctive look and equipment list to justify such a huge price difference. Our friends at AUTOMOBILE have learned a few things about the next A7, codenamed "C8," including that it'll live up to the brand's "vorsprung durch technik" slogan.

Research

Under the hood, the new A7 is expected to keep the turbocharged 252-hp 2.0-liter inline-four engine currently available in Europe, but expect to see a 326-hp version with electric turbocharging (e-boost) as well. However, the S7 is expected to feature a highly-tuned version of the turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that is said to deliver 500 hp. Audi will also add a new 4.0-liter V-8 engine for the RS 7, which will offer up roughly 575 hp. Diesel variants are expected to deliver up to 350 hp with the help of e-boost, and a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that can be paired with either the turbo-four or V-6 engines is also in the works.

The new 2017 Audi A7 is expected to showcase dramatically different proportions, with a lower and wider stance, but it will stick closely to the five-door fastback concept we know today. In addition to these changes, the A7 will feature a custom, single-frame grille, LED headlights, active aero aids, and integrated fender blisters. Inside, ergonomics enter the modern era with more touchscreen-based controls. Just as we've seen on other Audi models, the A7 will include large, individually programmable full-color screens for the main instruments, along with a head-up display with night vision.
