A new teaser sketch shows the overall shape of the redesigned 2017 Hyundai Elantra compact sedan, which is scheduled to debut within the next few months. With flowing lines clearly cribbed from the Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan, the next Elantra looks to take on a more upscale appearance.

The front end of the new Elantra features Hyundai’s hexagonal corporate grille flanked by swept-back headlights with C-shaped LED light bars that mimic the Genesis sedan’s headlights. Two different character lines begin at the front fender, with one swooping up to meet the beltline and the other gradually rising along the profile. We can’t see much of the rear end, but the roofline appears to fall gradually by the rear windows, tapering into a stubby trunklid with wraparound taillights. Like the 2015 Hyundai Sonata’s relatively conservative redesign, the new Elantra’s overall look seems less extreme, but more refined than the current Elantra (pictured below).

Expect the 2017 Hyundai Elantra to ride on a revised platform, with new powertrains and a completely overhauled interior. The new compact sedan may offer the 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and dual-clutch transmission from the Sonata and Tucson, with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder likely to be the base engine.

With a global debut that’s “just around the corner,” according to Hyundai, stay tuned over the next few weeks to hear more about the redesigned compact sedan.
