AMG boss Tobias Moers recently said Black Series models were in the brand’s future but the skunkworks team wasn’t in a hurry to build one as the "base cars are so good" already. Despite those words, a spy photographer spotted what appears to be a prototype for the 2017 Mercedes AMG GT Black Series.

Spied at the Nürburgring, the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series prototype features more aggressive aerodynamics including a large front splitter and large rear spoiler. There are also winglets on the front fascia and wider front fenders. Additionally, the prototype features larger brakes and low profile tires.

Both variants can be had with optional carbon-ceramic discs measuring 15.8-inch front/14.2-inch rear. We wouldn’t be surprised if those optional brakes are standard on the GT Black Series.

Currently, the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 makes 456 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque in the base Mercedes-AMG GT and 503 hp and 479 lb-ft in the GT S. Rumors suggest that engine could make between 550 and 580 hp in the GT Black Series. We expect the rear-mounted seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle to carry over, though it could have a unique gear spread to better match the more powerful engine’s power curve.
