A Rocky History: Acura NSX Through the Years

The Acura NSX stunned the world when it arrived on the scene more than 25 years ago, but after its 15-year run came to an end, it had a rocky path back to production. Here's a brief history of the NSX's ups and downs.

1989

Acura NSX© Provided by MotorTrend Acura NSX The world catches its first glimpse of the Acura (Honda) NSX, first in sketches, then in sheetmetal at the Chicago auto show in February. Specs are still tentative, and Ayrton Senna is called in for final tuning.

1990

1991 Acura NSX© Provided by MotorTrend 1991 Acura NSX Finally, the NSX hits showrooms as a 1991 model with a mid-mounted 270-hp VTEC 3.0-liter V-6 and a five-speed manual gearbox. We're impressed enough that we call it "the best sports car ever built."

1995

1995 Acura Nsx T Side© Provided by MotorTrend 1995 Acura Nsx T Side The NSX-T arrives with a removable targa-style roof panel and an optional four-speed automatic. In 1997, displacement increases to 3.2 liters for an extra 20 hp, and a six-speed manual is standard.

1998

1999 Acura Nsx© Provided by MotorTrend 1999 Acura Nsx A special-edition NSX honors racing driver Alex Zanardi's two CART championships in Honda-powered race cars. Just 49 of the lightweight cars are built; all have fixed roofs, suspension mods, and unique styling cues.

2002

2002 Acura NSX© Provided by MotorTrend 2002 Acura NSX A refresh brings fixed headlamps, restyled front and rear valances, and suspension tweaks. In 2005, five JDM NSX-R GTs are built as homologation specials for a cool $500,000 each. Then NSX production ends.

2007

Acura Advanced Sports Car Concept© Provided by MotorTrend Acura Advanced Sports Car Concept Almost two decades after the original NSX debuted in Chicago, the Acura Advanced Sports Car Concept stuns Detroit auto showgoers. Acura says AWD and a front-mounted V-10 are in the car's future.

2007

MotorTend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTend Image Later that year, what appears to be a heavily modified S2000 is spotted at the Nurburgring and is rumored to be a prototype for the next-gen NSX. We don't see it a second time.

2008

MotorTend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTend Image A new prototype is spotted at the 'Ring with bodywork resembling the previous concept's. Ultimately, the car is revealed to be a mule for the Super GT HSV-010 GT race car, and the NSX project is dead again.

2012

Acura NSX Concept© Provided by MotorTrend Acura NSX Concept Years pass with little known of the NSX's status. Then Acura brings a new NSX concept to the Detroit auto show. The concept shares the basic AWD, hybrid, mid-engined configuration of the production car.

2015
