A 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI just set a new record for “lowest fuel consumption—48 U.S. contiguous States for a non-hybrid car” as documented by Guinness World Records. The diesel hatchback averaged 81.18 mpg over the course of 8,233.5 miles, while visiting each of the continental 48 U.S. states. The entire trip was done on 101.43 gallons of fuel at a cost of $294.98, according to VW.

Driven by Wayne Gerdes, automotive journalist and founder of cleanmpg.com, and Bob Winger, an electronics engineer specializing in energy and conservation projects, the Golf TDI beat the previous record of 77.99 mpg. Gerdes set the previous record in 2013 with a 2013 Volkswagen Passat TDI. Currently, the best record of a hybrid vehicle stands at "just" 74.34 mpg. The journey took 16 days to complete and began and ended at Volkswagen of America’s headquarters in Herndon, Va., on June 22 and July 7, respectively.

“Volkswagen’s TDI Clean Diesel engines are just amazing,” said Wayne Gerdes. “I don’t think people realize the potential mileage you can get from them. In our experience, it is possible to get truly impressive mileage results by using just a few simple fuel-saving techniques.”

The 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI has an EPA-rated fuel economy of 31/43/36 mpg city/highway/combined with the DSG transmission and 30/45/36 mpg with the six-speed manual transmission.

Fuel used for the record-setting drive was Shell ultra-low sulfur diesel, while the 2015 Golf TDI rolled on Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max tires. The team used a Linear Logic ScanGauge II to measure fuel economy and LG G4 smartphones and a Garmin nüvi 57 LM GPS navigator to meet Guinness World Records tracking requirements. Earlier this week, Honda announced that a Honda Civic Tourer i-DTEC diesel-powered wagon had visited all 24 European Union countries averaging 100.31 mpg traveling 8,387 miles over a 25-day period.
