BMW's tuning partner Alpina has produced some fast Bimmers over the years, but none have been hybrids. That may soon change, according to a report from Autocar. The tuning house's chief said a hybrid Alpina could happen if the right car from BMW came along.

At the brand's 50th anniversary celebration, Alpina CEO Andy Bovensiepen told Autocar, "Hybrid technology is advancing quickly. We're now seeing what I'd call 'second-generation' hybrids and EVs, like the BMW i8, and it's becoming more interesting."

However, the executive stressed that Alpina's customers expect an exciting drive all the time, and that many electrified models run out of steam once the battery is depleted. In our 2014 Best Driver's Car competition, we found this was exactly the case with the BMW i8. That car delivered surprising performance when fully charged, but it simply puttered out once the lithium-ion batteries were drained. Still, Alpina wouldn't rule out the possibility of tuning a hybrid BMW in the future.

"If we have a good technical base of a car from BMW and we also see the sales figures taking off, then we could have a car ready within two years," Bovensiepen said.

The exec also said Alpina is continuing to look into alternative fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
