Alpine Celebration Concept Pays Tribute to Classic A110 at Le Mans

Renault is celebrating 60 years of its performance-oriented Alpine brand, and to mark the occasion the French automaker has unveiled the Alpine Celebration concept at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The concept recalls motorsports greats like the Alpine A110, and wears the brand’s iconic shade of blue.

The deep blue and orange color scheme harkens back to past Alpine race cars that competed at Le Mans, including the A110, A210, A220, M63, and others. Just like past Alpine models, the concept is a mid-rear-engine, rear-drive compact sports car with seating for two. The roofline and quad masked headlights are clear nods to the A110, but carbon fiber pieces like the spoiler, side skirts, diffuser, and mirrors give it a more modern feel. The wheels are an update on a design that was popular on Alpine models in the 1970s.

The automaker doesn’t give any clues as to what powers the concept, but given its size, we think a rear-mounted turbocharged four-cylinder would be a good fit. That would also pay homage to its heritage, as the Alpine A110 was powered by mostly Renault inline-fours. The concept was built to mark Alpine’s 60th anniversary, but we know that Renault plans to revive the brand with a production car by 2016. Could this be a taste of things to come from the famed French motorsports marque? We hope so.

The Alpine Celebration concept will make the rounds at a number of special events throughout the year, including the Goodwood Festival of Speed later this month and the “Alpine Saga” reunion on September 11-13.
