Although rumors of an Aston Martin hypercar designed in conjunction with Adrian Newey of Formula 1 fame have been swirling, the British automaker’s CEO says that such a project is still up in the air, according to a report from Auto Express.

“There is rarely smoke without fire,” Andy Palmer, Aston Martin CEO, told Auto Express. “I have talked openly about a flagship supercar and a number of studies, including designs, are going on, but the speculation about Adrian Newey does not come from us.

“Do I like the idea of Adrian Newey doing a road car with Aston? Yes. He is a man with a legacy to leave, but there is no authentic program with him, yet.”

If that happens, the automaker could use Mercedes-Benz-sourced engines and electrical hardware. At that time, there were also hints that Aston Martin was in talks with Red Bull Racing and Newey about various projects.

Unlike the track-only Aston Martin Vulcan shown earlier this year, a new Aston Martin supercar would be developed for the road. “We hope to make a decision by the end of the year, but we won’t rush the decision,” Palmer added.
