We thought Audi was crazy for 2015 Audi A3 TDI First Drive" target="_blank">challenging us to drive 834 miles on a single tank of diesel in an A3 TDI last year. But now, Audi is plotting to take an A6 TDI Ultra on a 1,000-mile trek through at least 10 different countries, and once again, it only plans on using just a single tank of fuel.

In collaboration with driving assistance company RAC, Audi is hoping to secure a Guinness World Records title for the greatest number of countries visited on one tank of fuel. Tomorrow, the A6 TDI ultra will begin its journey driving through the Netherlands, before making its way through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Germany, Italy, and into the Balkans. On one tank of diesel, the trip could cost as little as 88 pounds, or roughly $135 when converted to U.S. currency.

The Audi A6 TDI ultra should be ready for the job, coordinators say, because of its 19.3-gallon tank and exceptional fuel economy. With its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the A6 TDI ultra reaches over 67 mpg on the European scale. In the U.S., the only A6 TDI offered is a 3.0-liter V-6 turbo engine, which achieves up to 30 mpg in combined city and highway diving. MotorTrend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTrend Image

Audi has strategically planned a route that avoids congested cities as well as highways and mountain roads. Behind the wheel will sit automotive journalist Andrew Frankel and racing driver Rebecca Jackson, who will take turns hypermiling the A6 to the finish line.
