Audi's first all-electric SUV will debut in concept form at the Frankfurt motor show in September. In 2018, a final version will reach production, and it will likely feature many of the same advanced technologies.

The automaker says that the new electric crossover will slot between the Q5 and Q7 in terms of length. That means Audi may still be plotting to call it the Q6 when it enters production. Also helping to differentiate the SUV from the rest of the lineup is its dramatically sloped roofline that provides a coupe-like appearance.

The body is complete with unique aerodynamic elements, including wheel spoilers. These features, along with a sliding rear spoiler and sliding rear diffuser, improve airflow around the car and help it achieve a range of more than 310 miles.

Three electric motors, one on the front axle and two on the rear, effectively create an electrified Quattro all-wheel drive system for the SUV. A large lithium-ion battery is positioned between the axles and below the passenger compartment, giving the vehicle a low center of gravity. The model will sit on Volkswagen's second-generation MLB platform that accommodates a variety of different drivetrains.

As Audi hinted at earlier this summer, the e-tron SUV will make use of Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology, a step up from traditional lights. Not only is the OLED technology shown on the headlights, but it is also incorporated into the multiple display screens inside the car. Also inside the cabin, look for a flat-bottom steering wheel and protruding center console. The concept model only seats four people, but we expect that will change when it's ready for production.
