Audi R8 Competition Takes Cues From LMS Racer

The impressive Audi R8 LMS race car is limited to the track, but the automaker is going to offer what is essentially a road-going version of the car. Set to debut at next month's Los Angeles auto show is the Audi R8 competition, which will be limited to just 60 copies in the U.S.

We already had a hunch that Audi wasn’t quite done with this generation of R8. Earlier this month a camouflaged R8 prototype had us scratching our heads, and this competition model appears to be the final product of that tester. 2015 Audi R8 Competition© Provided by MotorTrend 2015 Audi R8 Competition

Like the LMS car, the R8 competition gets the 5.2-liter V-10 churning out 570 hp through a seven-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. Audi says the special R8 should run to 60 mph in an estimated 3.2 seconds. Other LMS-like upgrades include a full aero kit with a fixed rear spoiler, matte-carbon side blades, and rear diffuser. Carbon fiber bits are used inside and out to cut down on weight, while ceramic brakes and a sport exhaust system round out the major performance bits.

Audi says it will take orders starting next month, and customers could get their cars as early as the beginning of next year. Following that, it’ll be a waiting game for the next-generation R8. The new version is expected to be lighter and will likely launch with a carryover V-8 and V-10, though a turbocharged powerplant is expected sometime down the line.
