The first BMW 7 Series prototype has been spotted in the U.S. Earlier prototypes for the full-size BMW sedan have been spotted in Europe, but this 7 Series mule was spotted in Southern California by one of Hot Rod magazine’s staff members.

Research

As with the previous mule, this prototype is heavily camouflaged, giving us few clues to its styling. While we expect its styling to be in line with other recent BMW models, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has raised expectations for the full-size luxury sedan segment, offering such standard features as LED headlights. We expect the BMW 7 Series to follow suit. This test mule wears dummy headlights, but the housings appear slimmer compared to the current model, while the dual-kidney grille looks flatter as it does on many new BMW models. We've seen the headlights mostly undisguised before, with the familiar LED halo rings visible.

The automaker’s new rear-drive 35up flexible architecture will debut under the next-generation BMW 7 Series. That chassis will likely feature a mix of alloy and composite material and will also underpin future 3, 4, 5, and 6 Series models. Like the current model, we expect turbocharged I-6, V-8, and V-12 powerplants to return as well as hybrid and diesel models.

The next-generation BMW 7 Series isn't expected to debut until late next year, but seeing it on our own shores is a good sign that the car is getting closer.
