BMW Signs New Contract Manufacturing Agreement with Magna

Contract manufacturers play a crucial, but often unnoticed and unheralded role in the automotive industry. Several popular models have been built by contract manufacturers at one time or another. Many first-generation Porsche Boxsters were built in Finland by Valmet, and Austria-based Magna Steyr has been a longtime partner with BMW and its Mini division, building the Countryman compact crossover, and the 2013 MINI Cooper S Paceman First Drive - Motor Trend" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">two-door Paceman. BMW has announced production of those two models is moving to Mini's main manufacturing plant in Oxford, England after 2016. But BMW has signed a new contract manufacturing agreement with Magna to build future models, according to a Magna statement.

Neither BMW nor Magna has publicly said what model will be built once 2011 MINI Cooper S Countryman All4 Verdict - Motor Trend" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Countryman and Paceman production moves to England. The cars could be any vehicle within the BMW family, which could include BMW, Mini or Rolls-Royce, although an Austrian-built Rolls seems unlikely. The company also previously built the BMW X3, before production moved to South Carolina for the second-generation model.

The Graz newspaper Kleine Zeitung has speculated 3 or 5 Series cars or other high-volume models could be built by Magna at the plant, but that capacity is being reserved for several different models, depending on demand.
