Former Ferrari technical direct Roberto Fedeli has joined the BMW Group. The news comes just weeks after Ferrari CEO Luca di Montezelmolo officially announced his resignation from the iconic Italian automaker.

Automotive News reports that Fedeli is slated to start his new role next month. Succeeding Fedeli is Michael Leiters, who has been Ferrari’s chief technological officer since January. Leiters previously headed the Cayenne program before leaving Porsche for Ferrari. 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale A© Provided by MotorTrend 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale A

Fedeli is expected to play a big role at BMW’s M performance division, inheriting an extensive lineup that includes the 2015 M3 sedan, M6 Gran Coupe, and everything in between. Rumors also suggest he could lend his expertise over at Rolls-Royce. Fedeli had been with Ferrari for over two decades and has been the lead engineer for a number of vehicles, including the Ferrari LaFerrari hybrid supercar.

It’s unclear why Fedeli left his post, though Ferrari points out that he quit before di Montezemolo’s announcement.

That said, the departure of Fedeli and di Montezemolo are significant personnel changes for Ferrari. Once di Montezemolo officially steps down on October 13, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne will take his place. Marchionne and di Montezemolo recently spoke at a press conference where both men outlined future plans for Ferrari. Marchionne vowed that a Ferrari-badged SUV or sedan is not on the table, nor is a plan to increase production. However, Marchionne has made it a priority to turn around Scuderia Ferrari’s performance in Formula 1 and return the team to its former glory.
