BMW Teases Two New Concepts Ahead of Monterey Debut

BMW plans to introduce two new concept cars at this year's Monterey Car Week ahead of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. While BMW has yet to reveal any details about the new concept cars, this teaser photo shows the radical steering wheel that will be featured on at least one of the new models.

Research

The BMW steering wheel is a racy design that recalls video-game controllers rather than the wheels used on street cars. It's a wide, horizontal design that somewhat resembles the wheels of Formula 1 and other racing cars. Four buttons surround the centrally mounted roundel logo, another two are mounted at the very top of the wheel, and large shift paddles sit behind the wheel. Given the futuristic design, it's possible that at least one of the BMW concept cars could be the German company's take on a Gran Turismo -ready virtual car.

Last year, BMW used the Pebble Beach festivities to introduce two cars that had already been revealed elsewhere. The company introduced its 30th Anniversary Edition of the BMW M5, and the Vision Future Luxury concept that had previously been shown in Beijing. And the automaker auctioned the one-off BMW i8 Concours d'Elegance edition, which sold for an impressive $825,000.
