BMW X6-Fighting Mercedes GLE Coupé Prototype Shows Lots of Skin

A Mercedes-Benz GLE prototype has surfaced once again. The purported BMW X6-fighter will reportedly make its world debut at next month’s Detroit auto show, so it’s not surprising to see this tester essentially uncovered, save for a few patches of camouflage used to conceal the headlights, lower bumpers, and parts of the taillights.

That said, these photos provide the most revealing peek at Benz’s new crossover to date. As previously reported, the crossover will be called the GLE Coupé thanks to Benz’s tweaking of its nomenclature. It will be based on what is now called the M-Class, though that model will switch its name to GLE.

The GLE Coupé will be the stylish sibling in the duo, with a sloping roofline and a fairly aggressive-looking front fascia. The thin and horizontally oriented taillights appear to be inspired by the S-Class coupe. The quad-tipped exhaust is an indication that this prototype is likely powered by Benz’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8. An AMG variant is also on the way, and a prototype of that version (likely to be called MLC63) was previously snapped back in May.

Don’t expect this to be Benz’s only Coupé-badged crossover. Rumors suggest an X4-fighter is also on the way, likely to be based on the next-generation GLK that will soon switch its name to GLC.
