Dang. Well, our tears of disappointment aren’t going to help the salty lake issue any, so we’ll dry ‘em and give you the facts. After a last minute rainstorm flooded the Bonneville Salt Flats just days before the scheduled start of Bonneville Speed Week 2014, the SCTA board thought it might still be possible for things to dry out enough for racing to continue later in the week. Then more rain came in, and today the SCTA was forced to cancel the event. The salt just won’t be dry enough for racing, not to mention the difficulties for spectators and crew, as the entrance and exits of the track are under even more water.

We are of course, very bummed, and feel bad for everyone involved, the SCTA who works so hard to prepare for the event, and all the racers and fans who traveled far distances (sometimes internationally) to participate. Of course, that’s racing, and there will be plenty to look forward to later this year. Below is the official SCTA statement.

The SCTA Board is currently on the salt, and has determined that the standing water will not dry in time for us to hold our annual Speed Week event. The Board is also discussing the possibility of extending our next event – World Finals (Sep 30 – Oct 3) into a full week of racing as a sort of delayed Speed Week. We Thank You all for your patience and understanding. We look forward to seeing you at our next event.
