Brabus Smart Fortwo Prototype Looks Ready to Slice Through Traffic

The Brabus-tuned Smart car has always seemed like a strange combination considering the tuner’s more ambitious creations like its 850-HP Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG. But apparently the Brabus-tuned Smart microcar has been successful enough to warrant a comeback, this time with a version based on the new 2016 Smart Fortwo.

Research

Spy photographers recently snapped a Smart ForTwo prototype with modifications that suggest a new Brabus-tuned model is on the way. One big giveaway is the twin exhaust setup similar to the one found in the outgoing Brabus Smart car. Other modifications include a lower ride height, wider fenders, bigger wheels, and larger brakes. In all, it looks like it should be fairly entertaining to drive.

It’s unknown if Brabus plans to tune any of the powertrains. In standard form, the 1.0-liter four-cylinder engine makes 71 hp and 67 lb-ft of torque (this engine isn’t coming to the U.S.), while the turbocharged, 0.9-liter I-3 is rated at 89 hp.

While the Brabus Smart car was only offered in the U.S. for a short time, the modified microcar has been relatively successful in Europe. With that said, it’s unclear if the special Smart will find its way back to our shores again.
