Buick to Import Future Lineup from Overseas

According to two sources inside Buick, the majority of the automaker's lineup may be imported from China and Europe, while only two models will still be produced in the U.S. Buick's shift to importing its vehicles follows a trend that other automakers like Ford are currently moving toward.

Right now, it's expected that the LaCrosse and Enclave replacements will still be built in North America, but the Verano and Regal production will likely shift to Europe and China for the start of model-year 2017 production. The Regal is currently built in Canada. Encore production is currently handled in Korea, but with the big shift to China, there's a chance this model will also be transferred.

The move is a big step for Buick, as China is the automaker's biggest market, with sales of 919,582 vehicles last year, nearly four times what it sold in the U.S. This news comes alongside the announcement that Buick will build the all-new Cascada convertible in Europe, and the Envision compact crossover in China. Production for the Envision has already started and will hit the U.S. in late 2016.

General Motors has yet to comment, while a Buick spokesperson told Reuters earlier this week that "We do not comment on future product speculation."
