Buick Up, All Other GM Brands Down in February

Three out of General Motors’ four brands were down this month, with Buick being the exception with its 18.8-percent increase. In total, GM sold 222,104 vehicles this month, a 1 percent decrease compared with last year. Chevrolet and Cadillac were both down 2.9 percent, and GMC was flat with a 0.6-percent decrease. After two full months of sales, GM is trailing 2013’s year-to-date numbers by 6.1 percent.


Winners: Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Malibu, Up 21.7 and 17.8 Percent, Respectively

Chevrolet’s popular compact and midsize sedan models were both up significantly this month, with the Cruze posting its best February ever with 21,836 units sold, up 21.7 percent. That makes the Cruze the second best-selling Chevrolet behind the Silverado pickup throughout the first two months of 2014. The Chevrolet Malibu was up too, with its 17,448 units sold this month representing a 17.8-percent increase.

Winner: Buick Brand, Up 18.8 Percent

Although its 19,192-unit total doesn’t contribute much to GM’s overall total, all Buick vehicles were up in February. The biggest growth came from the Buick Encore, which sold 3078 units for a 92.7-percent increase. The Buick Enclave continued as the brand’s best-seller with 5319 units this month, but the Buick Verano wasn’t far behind with its 4472-unit total. The LaCrosse and the Regal were up as well, by 12.4 and 49.3 percent, respectively.

Winner: Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, 2438 Units Sold

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray continues to be in high demand, posting a 148.8-percent increase this month. In fact, the Corvette’s 2438 sales this month—not to mention its 4699 year-to-date total—put it ahead of more mainstream products like the Chevrolet Suburban SUV, the Chevrolet Volt plug-in, and even the Cadillac ATS sedan.

Loser: Chevrolet Silverado, Down 12.1 Percent

The Chevrolet Silverado was down by 12.1 percent this month, selling only 36,584 units. Yes, the GMC Sierra stayed relatively flat with a 0.7-percent increase, but putting the two trucks’ sales together makes for a combined number of 50,816 units sold this month. This number trails the Ford F-Series which sold 55,882 units in February, and the Ram pickup is even starting to creep towards the Silverado’s numbers with its 29,303 units sold this month.

Loser: Cadillac Brand, Down 2.9 Percent

Every Cadillac model was down this month except for the Cadillac SRX, which posted a 23.1-percent increase and continued as the brand’s best-selling model. Interestingly, the new Cadillac CTS has been outselling the smaller ATS so far this year, no thanks to the ATS’ 28.2-percent decline this month. Perhaps the arrival of the 2015 Cadillac Escalade can bring some action back to Cadillac showrooms later this spring.

Loser: Big SUVs, Down Across the Board

GM’s full-size SUV quartet of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL all declined this month, most likely in anticipation of the redesigned 2015 models which go on sale this month. Hopefully these new trucks can reverse the fate of the outgoing models, which posted declines of up to 45.7 percent this month in the case of the Chevrolet Suburban.

Loser: Cadillac ELR, 58 sales

The Cadillac ELR plug-in hybrid hasn't exactly been a roaring success. No doubt in part because it is so expensive, the energy-efficient coupe sold just 58 units last month -- and has only attracted 99 buyers so far all this year. Of course, the Chevrolet Volt also had slow initial sales, so it's possible ELR volumes will pick up later this year.
