Buick kicked off the 2015 Shanghai motor show by pulling the sheets off the brand’s newest entry into the Chinese market, the Verano. Inspired by the Riviera and Avenir concepts, the luxury sedan is being touted as Buick’s next-generation sports sedan, with fresh styling, excellent fuel efficiency, and precise handling.

The Chinese Verano features the signature Buick waterfall grille, with the same wing-shaped headlights and taillights found on the Avenir concept. The sharply raked windshield streamlines into the roofline, which slopes downward into the C-pillar, giving the Verano a fastback-like appearance. The double-sweep beltline is also a familiar Buick styling cue, while fancy 17-inch, 10-spoke wheels complete the look.

Under the hood, the Verano boasts a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that puts out 166 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. That engine sounds like the one offered in the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, and it will benefit from a standard stop-start system. In the Verano, the 1.5-liter mill will come paired with a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that’s been tweaked to produce smoother shifts. The Verano also sits atop a chassis that’s been reworked for Chinese roads. MotorTrend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTrend Image

The Verano joins the Excelle GT in the Chinese lineup, which is the car that the current U.S.-spec Verano is based on. Either way, the new Verano could preview what’s in store for the next-gen Verano, considering we haven’t seen a significant update in quite a while. Buick isn't ready to say whether or not this Verano will be offered outside of China, but that seems like a strong possibility. The current U.S.-market Verano offers a 2.0-liter turbo-four and 2.4-liter I-4 engine combined with a six-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual is also available, though it’s only for the turbo models.
