A new Cadillac positioned above the XTS sedan will go into production in the fourth quarter of 2015, General Motors announced today.

Cadillac's new flagship will be a rear-wheel-drive, "high-technology" car that sits on a unique vehicle architecture. It will also include "custom-designed" luxury materials.

We reported Cadillac's move upmarket last year when we gave our own visual rendering of what such a new range-topping car would look like. Our version, which featured an elongated body and LED lighting, took some cues from Cadillac's Elmiraj Concept large two-door coupe. Cadillac has not yet shown us exactly what this new car will look like, and has not yet even decided on a name for the model.

The car will likely compete against top luxury sedans like the Audi A8, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and BMW 7 Series, models that run well over $70,000. Cadillac's current largest sedan starts in the mid-$40,000 range.

The new flagship will make its first appearance in the first half of next year. Cadillac has already finished retooling its factory to make way for the new sedan. It will be built at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant in Michigan where the ELR is also built.
