For the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series, Chevrolet is bringing out its newly developed aero packages, featuring a road course/short oval body design with pedestal-mounted "front uppers" on the front wing, larger rear bumper pods, and other upgrades.

Chris Berube, Chevrolet IndyCar program manager, said, "This new aero kit provides Chevrolet drivers the capability to enter and exit corners faster, while maintaining high speeds on the straights." Key aerodynamic upgrades include a multi-element upper rear wing with louvered end plates as well as new "wheel wedges" in front of the rear tires. General Motors also redesigned the layout of the turbocharger and exhaust system for more compact shapes on the engine cover and side pods for improved aerodynamic performance. 2015 Chevrolet IndyCar Aero Package© Provided by MotorTrend 2015 Chevrolet IndyCar Aero Package

Chevrolet developed the new aero package in nine key phases, using the DW12 racecar's aerodynamics as its baseline before establishing design goals. The next step involved computer-aided design concepts, followed by aerodynamic simulations on the computer.

The automaker then utilized 3D printing to test specific parts before conducting tests on a 50-percent scale in a rolling-road wind tunnel and before performing the same tests on a full-scale version. The last step was taking a real-world prototype out to the pavement, running it around select racetracks including the Circuit of The Americas and Homestead-Miami Speedway.

"This is an important milestone in Chevrolet's involvement in IndyCar racing. We focused on developing an aerodynamic package that delivers a balanced combination of downforce and drag, along with integrated engine performance. It's a total performance package," said Jim Campbell, General Motors U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports.

The racecars will make their official racing debut on March 29 at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Fla. Also watch for more action from these cars at Indianapolis in May.
