The Chevrolet Spark EV will go on sale in Maryland this spring, marking the green car's first journey to East Coast dealerships.

In Maryland, the Spark EV will be available for $17,845 after state and federal tax credits. The Spark EV is currently only available in California and Oregon, where sales totaled 1145 units last year, up 86.5 percent from the previous year.

So why is a state on the opposite side of the country destined to receive the Spark EV next? According to Steve Majoros, Chevrolet director of car marketing, customer demand was just part of the decision.

“Maryland has a strong commuter market and a good charging infrastructure, which influenced the decision to make it the Spark EV’s first East Coast market,” Majoros said in a recent statement. “We also have a strong dealership network in the Old Line State that’s eager to offer it.” Maryland's GM Baltimore Operations facility is also the home of manufacturing for the Spark EV's electric motor and drive unit. 2015 Chevrolet Spark EV Charging© Provided by MotorTrend 2015 Chevrolet Spark EV Charging

The Spark EV still claims the title as the most efficient EV available for retail sale in the U.S. with a 119 MPGe in combined city and highway driving. Although Chevrolet is expanding its EV lineup in the near future, the Spark EV will remain the least expensive option thanks to a starting price of $27,645 (before credits). The Bolt EV, which was introduced at the Detroit auto show this month, will start around $30,000 after tax incentives, while the Volt is currently sold for around $35,000.
