All-wheel drive is coming to the U.S.-spec 2015 BMW 2 Series. After news broke that the best-driving BMW in recent memory was adding all-wheel drive to the option list in Europe, BMW confirmed that the U.S. version of the new sports coupe would also be getting optional all-wheel drive.

Those in the Snow Belt should no longer find it difficult to justify purchasing a 2015 BMW 2 Series. Known as "xDrive" in BMW parlance, the rear-biased all-wheel drive system should help retain the characteristics that led to resident racer Randy Pobst calling the 2 Series, "The best-handling production BMW I've driven in 10 years."

Opting for all-wheel drive only adds $1800 to the sticker price of a 2015 2 Series. The rear-drive base 2015 BMW 228i, which is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 making 240 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque, goes for $33,050, while the 2015 228i xDrive goes for $34,850. The hotter 2015 BMW M235i costs $44,050, with the all-wheel drive 2015 M235i xDrive stickering for $45,850. The M235i is powered by a 320-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 producing 330 lb-ft of torque.

The 2015 BMW 2 Series is expected to hit dealers this summer.
