Rated 526 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque, the all-new 5.2-liter flat-plane-crank V-8 in the new Ford Shelby GT350 and GT350R makes nearly 102 hp per liter. It’s also the most powerful naturally aspirated V-8 from Ford. Hence, a bespoke transmission was needed to handle the power and 8,250-rpm redline.

Based around the Tremec TR-3160 six-speed manual transmission, the unit in the Shelby GT530/350R has been revised to work with the high-revving engine. The Shelby's TR-3160 features a lightweight, gun-drilled main shaft for the gears. After the heat-treating process, the main shaft is power-honed to improve smoothness and reduce gear lash and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). Additionally, the sides of the "I-section gears" are milled to remove unstressed material and further reduce weight.

Carbon-bronze triple-cone synchronizers are used to maintain smoothness and heat resistance during high-performance driving. A dual-mass flywheel and dual-disc clutch transfers power from the engine to the transmission. The dual-mass flywheel is said to smooth engagement and reduce NVH as well as eliminate the need for damping springs in the clutch hub. This also allows for a lighter, smaller-diameter clutch for reduced rotating mass. The flywheel and clutch are mounted in a compact and stiff die-cast clutch housing.

Mounted in an aluminum housing, the lightweight shifter uses a low-friction main pivot-ball and shifter-linkage joints for low-effort shifts and short throws. The shift rail features aggressive detents for positive engagement feel. Additionally, the transmission mechanism sits in a custom clutch housing, while the rear extension housing has been shortened. The transmission’s 3.2-inch center-to-center distance gives it a tidy package with high torque capacity. The bespoke TR-3160 transmission’s compact and stiff design further reduces overall driveline NVH.

Heat is further kept in check by the oil-to-air transmission cooler available with the GT350 Track Package and GT350R. A gerotor pump in the transmission housing feeds the cooler. The dedicated transmission cooler isolates engine and transmission heat for better cooling of both components. Mounted behind the front fascia, the transmission cooler features dedicated ducting for maximum airflow. A sensor in the transmission monitors heat and can display an overheating condition to the driver in the gauge cluster.
