Elon Musk has graciously agreed to donate $1 million to a new Tesla science center that celebrates the life of inventor Nikola Tesla, and it's all thanks to a funny little comic strip.

Matthew Inman, creator of the Web comic "The Oatmeal," wrote a comic-like review of his Tesla Model S, and after that, he wrote about his hero, Mr. Tesla, the man who invented the AC induction motor. Inman expressed his interest in saving Tesla's laboratory (which was to be sold and turned into a retail center) to turn it into a science center. He then sparked a campaign to raise at least $850,000 to save the old lab from being sold, and he ended up raising more than $1 million, of which $250,000 came from Musk. 2014 Tesla Model S Detroit Stand© Provided by MotorTrend 2014 Tesla Model S Detroit Stand

However, $8 million was still needed to actually build the museum, and Inman asked for Musk's help once again. Earlier this week at a birthday party held for Nikola Tesla's 85th birthday at the lab located in Shoreham, N.Y., it was announced that Musk kindly agreed to donate $1 million to the Tesla Science Center. Inman on his website reports he had a conference call with Musk, who also promised to build a supercharger at the museum.

The science center's Facebook page reports Jane Alcorn, president of the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe is more than happy with the donation. “We are excited and extremely grateful for Mr. Musk’s generous gift to Tesla Science Center, and also to Matthew Inman for arranging the opportunity.” 2013 Tesla Model S© Provided by MotorTrend 2013 Tesla Model S

When finished, the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe will feature a Nikola Tesla Museum, and a learning and innovation center. There's no word yet on a timeline for the development of the center, but let's hope that Inman finds another way to raise the rest of the money so that we can see it sooner rather than later.
