The next-generation Ford S-Max has been ahead of its debut at the Paris auto show next month, more than a year after the concept car bowed at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. With its seven-passenger capacity and a long list of new technology, the S-Max should continue to be a popular seller in Europe.

The S-Max has a overall shape that looks like a stretched C-Max. The final production version looks close enough to the concept, with sleek lines, bold taillights, and Ford’s familiar corporate mug with a gaping grille. The S-Max is also the first model to feature the automaker’s dynamic LED headlamps, which adjusts brightness to avoid distracting oncoming drivers.

The three-row S-Max will be offered with a number of gas- and diesel-powered engines. A 1.5-liter EcoBoost, for example, is efficient and makes 158 hp, while a 2.0-liter turbodiesel is rated at up to 178 hp. All-wheel drive is optional, but adaptive steering, torque steer compensation, and active nibble compensation are all standard and improve handling and steering feel.

Other available technologies including a parking assist system, a hands-free tailgate, and a long list of advanced safety features.

Ford isn’t bringing the S-Max to the U.S., at least for now. However, if Ford wants to stay true to its “One Ford” mantra, then we could see the S-Max eventually make it to the U.S. The S-Max's only direct competition in this market, the Mazda5, is getting axed next year, so Ford could have that segment all to itself if it does decide to import the seven-passenger mini-minivan.
