Ferrari 488 Spider is Just as Quick as GTB, Will Debut in Frankfurt

The follow-up to the Ferrari 458 Spider is coming to Frankfurt in the form of the 2016 Ferrari 488 Spider. Like the 488 GTB coupe, the 488 Spider is powered by a twin-turbo 3.9-liter flat-plane-crank V-8. And like its predecessor, the 488 Spider sports a power retractable hard top.

The 488 Spider makes the same 660 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque as the GTB, but that power has to move slightly more weight. With optional equipment, the 488 Spider weighs in at 3,362 pounds, or just over 100 pounds more than its coupe counterpart. Still, Ferrari says its retractable hard top system saves 55 pounds compared to a traditional fabric soft top. Ferrari also says the 488 Spider can sprint from 0-62 mph in 3 seconds flat, which is identical to the sports car maker's estimate for the GTB. In addition, Ferrari estimates the Spider can hit 124 mph in 8.7 seconds. It'll take a bit longer to raise or lower the hard top, estimated to happen in 14 seconds.

Because of the car's multi-material spaceframe chassis, Ferrari says the Spider boasts the same torsional rigidity and beam stiffness as the coupe. The retractable hard top folds back into two overlapping sections that mount flush on the engine. Flying buttresses flank the engine bay, and channel air into the intakes. Like the coupe, the 488 Spider utilizes a blown spoiler and underbody vortex generators to both increase downforce and reduce drag. The power rear window can be adjusted to one of three positions, allowing varying levels of engine noise to seep into the cabin.

The Ferrari 488 Spider will make its debut in September at the Frankfurt auto show before arriving in the U.S. next summer as a 2016 model.
