First 2016 Audi A4 Prototype Spotted in Germany

The first prototype for the 2016 Audi A4 has been spotted testing in Germany. Later design changes are rumored to have delayed development and launch of the upcoming premium midsize sedan.

This test mule is well hidden by camouflage, but from the looks of it, the A4 's basic body shape hasn't changed much. The sedan maintains the current car's sloping roofline and short rear deck, though headlights and taillights appear to be altered slightly.

The 2015 Q7 SUV will be the first Audi to arrive on the new architecture that also underpins the new 2015 Porsche Macan. MLB was developed for longitudinal engines in front- or all-wheel-drive applications and consists of ultra-high-strength steel, aluminum, and some composite material. The new architecture could shed 200-250 pounds off the new model compared to the current car.

While powertrain details haven’t been confirmed, we expect the 2016 Audi A4 sedan to use gas and diesel engines as well as a new plug-in hybrid variant. The A4 will likely get a version of the current car’s 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 and 3.0-liter supercharged V-6. Other body styles include an A4 Avant (wagon) and A4 Allroad crossover, while high-performance S4 and RS4 models are also expected.
