Chevrolet recently challenged the Ford F-250 Super Duty to a frame twist test to see if it would outperform the Silverado 2500HD on uneven terrain. So which vehicle won?

Research

AMCI Testing, a third-party research firm, was hired by Chevrolet to drive each truck over two staggered ramps. Due to the placement of the ramps, one wheel hit a ramp before the other, twisting the frame. Testers measured the distance between the cab body and bed to determine how much twist the frame of each pickup truck endured.

The results concluded that the Silverado HD took 0.26 inches of twist, compared to the F-250's 0.94 inches of twist. On the Silverado, the tailgate could be opened even under stress, unlike on the Ford. Check out the full video here.

Chevrolet attributes its win to the Silverado's use of roll-formed steel in the bed. This higher-grade steel is stronger and lighter, providing for increased rigidity. Other areas of the Silverado also use high-strength steel to improve crash test performance.

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD has been fully redesigned for the 2015 model year. Ford's heavy duty line, however, carries over with moderate changes including an upgraded diesel engine option. Expect a new generation to arrive in late 2016.
