Futuristic Mercedes Concept Previewed Ahead of CES

The mysterious and futuristic Mercedes-Benz prototype we spied earlier this year has surfaced again. This time around it’s an official teaser photo that the automaker posted on its Facebook page.

The photo shows off the concept car’s profile with an egg-shaped roofline with a squared-off rear end. The funky concept car first surfaced back in October when spy photographers caught Benz engineers test-driving the prototype.

Rumors suggested Mercedes would unveil the concept car at the 2015 Detroit auto show, though the teaser photo’s caption suggests it will actually debut at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) next month, a week prior to Detroit.

In the caption, Benz states “The future will be bolder than you’ve ever imagined. #mbCES.”

Automakers including Mercedes have increased their presence at CES in recent years. While consumer electronics like smartphones still dominate the show, automakers see CES as the perfect venue to show off their latest strides in technology. That said, it’s possible this Benz concept car will showcase a number of things, including an update to the automaker’s COMAND infotainment system, autonomous driving technology, and even vehicle-to-vehicle communications.

And given its aerodynamic shape, the concept car is likely focused on efficiency with power coming from a hybrid, all-electric, or fuel-cell technology. Either way, the concept is shaping up to be funkier than the hydrogen-powered F 125! concept that rolled into the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show with gullwing doors and seating for four.
