General Motors is recalling around 686,000 midsize crossovers in the U.S. over an issue with the rear liftgate. The recall includes 2008-2012 Buick Enclaves, 2009-2012 Chevrolet Traverses, 2007-2012 GMC Acadias, and 2007-2010 Saturn Outlooks.

GM Recalls 686,000 Crossovers for Liftgate Problem

The Problem : When opened, the power liftgates on these crossovers may suddenly fall and hit people. The crossovers are equipped with gas struts that hold up the liftgate when opened, but these struts may prematurely wear out when exposed to dirt particles. According to Reuters, 56 injuries have been reported as a result of the liftgate issue.

The Fix : To prevent future problems, GM dealers will update the software for the power liftgate actuator motor control unit. The new software calibration will help prevent the liftgate from collapsing when gas struts are worn. The automaker will contact owners regarding the recall, although it hasn't yet provided a schedule for the notification. All repairs will be conducted free of charge.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected : The recall includes 686,287 crossovers in the U.S. When including Canada and Mexico, the recall covers around 780,000 vehicles.
