GM Targeting Up to 300,000 Annual Sales for 2016 Chevrolet Malibu

The current Chevrolet Malibu is not a sales leader. The midsize sedan finishes mid-pack amongst its rivals nearly every month, posting sales numbers that aren’t even close to leaders in the segment like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Nissan Altima. That’s all expected to change with the new 2016 Malibu, as GM is banking on the new sedan to help reach an ambitious sales target.

According to Reuters, GM execs have reportedly told suppliers to prepare for increased sales of the Malibu in North America, with a sales target of 250,000 units a year. That’s 25 percent above last year’s target, and much more than the 188,519 Malibus sold for all of 2014. GM execs also told suppliers the target could go as high as 300,000 cars a year. In addition, the next Malibu is expected to deliver $1500 more profit per car compared to the Malibus before it, with GM hoping for at least $450 million in additional profit from the car. The company is expected to make this announcement next week at the 2015 New York International Auto Show, where the 2016 Malibu will also be shown in the flesh for the first time. We’ve already seen teasers for the new sedan, and Chevrolet has already revealed bits of information about the car. Aside from sporting a fresh appearance, the new Malibu will boast improved driving dynamics, a lighter body, and increased interior space. The 2016 Malibu will also spawn a hybrid version, which the automaker claims will achieve an estimated 45-plus mpg. After the Malibu makes its official debut, the automaker plans on making people more aware of the sedan with commercials that focus on the upgraded interior, fresh styling, fuel efficiency, and advanced safety systems.

Clearly, there’s a lot riding on the upcoming 2016 Malibu, and we’re sure to find out more about the sedan and the automaker’s expectations after the auto show officially kicks off next week.
