GM will grow production capacity for the next-generation 2016 Chevrolet Cruze compact sedan by adding this model to the production line at GM’s Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico as part of a $350 million investment in the facility.

Chevrolet already invested $270 million in the Lordstown, Ohio plant that currently makes the Cruze for the U.S. in preparation for the next-gen 2016 model. This further expansion will give GM more supply and flexibility for North America, as Reuters reports that most of the Cruze models produced in Mexico will be for the Mexican market, as opposed to the current setup which imports the Mexican-market Cruzes from GM’s plant in South Korea. Moving some production to Mexico will also save GM money thanks to lower labor costs and free trade agreements.

Research

Chevrolet Cruze One Millionth At Lordstown Complex© Provided by MotorTrend Chevrolet Cruze One Millionth At Lordstown Complex It’s unclear at this point whether the $350 million investment will add capacity to the facility, or whether the Ramos Arizpe plant will simply reallocate resources to build the Cruze. The facility currently builds the Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Captiva Sport, and the Chevrolet Sonic. The plant produced 173,400 units in 2014, and around 87 percent of the cars produced there are exported, though that may change going forward.

We don’t yet know official information about the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze, but we spotted an undisguised prototype last year that shows the redesigned sedan’s new look. Expect it to be powered by a small-displacement turbocharged four-cylinder when it debuts later this year. The 2016 Cruze will cap off a big year for Chevrolet’s car lineup, as it will follow debuts of the redesgined Volt, Malibu, Spark, and Camaro models.
