Global audio company Harman announced today that it has signed an agreement to acquire Bang & Olufsen’s automotive unit, making the company an even bigger giant in the automotive industry than it was before.

The two companies came to the agreement after Harman paid about $156 million for the acquisition, giving it Bang & Olufsen’s automotive business and license. The purchase, however, does not include Bang & Olufsen’s consumer electronic business. Even still, the buyout makes Harman a leader in the automotive sector, with the company already owning brands such as Bowers & Wilkins, Harman Kardon, Infinity, JBL, Lexicon, Mark Levinson, and Revel. Having Bang & Olufsen under its umbrella now means Harman has ties to nearly every automaker. MotorTrend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTrend Image

“From the marketing, scale and technologies Harman will bring to the business, we will strengthen and grow the Bang & Olufsen and B&O PLAY automotive audio brands and, importantly, further improve profitability, which is now in line with our existing car audio business,” said Chief Executive Dinesh Paliwal, in a statement.

Audi, Aston Martin, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz vehicles were all offered with Bang & Olufsen sound systems, so they’ll be added to Harman’s growing list of clients which already includes Volvo, Lexus, and Lincoln. The all-new Volvo XC90 is the first in the Swedish automaker’s lineup to be offered with the premium Bowers & Wilkins audio system, while Harman Kardon systems can be found in BMW, Mercedes, and other high-end makes. Buyers of certain Hyundai models have the option of upgrading to an Infinity audio system, while Toyota buyers can upgrade to a JBL system. Mark Levinson systems come on appropriately equipped Lexus vehicles, while a Revel audio system is an all-new addition to the Lincoln MKX.MotorTrend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTrend Image

Harman brands are already in more than 25 million cars, so this move is certain to increase that figure.
