It was a much closer race between the Chevrolet Cruze and Hyundai Elantra, with only 312 units separating the two. Trailing way behind in fifth place was the Ford Focus with 234,570 compacts sold, while a total of 141,259 Volkswagen Jettas were sold throughout 2013. The Nissan Sentra with 129,143 units sold remained the sixth most popular compact sold in the U.S. last year, while the Mazda3, even with the all-new model released in September, couldn't catch up. The Mazda3 finished in seventh place with 104,713 units, though next year could be better. Following the zoom-zoom compact is the Dodge Dart, which couldn’t hit the 100,000 mark with only 83,388 units sold. MotorTrend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTrend Image

Behind the Dart was the Subaru Impreza/WRX with 76,825 units sold, and with the next-gen WRX on the horizon, it could fare much better next year. Barely missing the top-10 cutoff was the Kia Forte with 75,681 units sold. And although it's loads of fun, the Volkswagen Golf was the least most popular selling compact with only a combined 3,931 Golfs, GTIs and Golf Rs sold.
