Pulling the sheet off of one of the only concepts at this year's New York auto show wasn't enough for Honda. The company went on to promise not only an all-new and greatly improved Civic for the masses, but also the radical Civic Type-R for the U.S. Market.

With Civic continually among Honda's top-selling models, the company is taking the redesign seriously, claiming this is the most comprehensive redesign the Civic has ever had. Among other things, Honda is promising a new platform, better refinement, more body styles, more powertrains, more variants, more technology, and more performance.

Details are a little light, but we're told the base car will get a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine while higher trims get an all-new 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. In prototype form, the 1.5 turbo was good for 206 hp and 192 lb-ft. They'll route power through a six-speed manual or CVT driving the front wheels.

Most exciting is the long-awaited confirmation that Honda will bring the all-new Civic Type-R to America. With "at least" 275 hp and a six-speed manual, it captured the front-wheel drive production car lap record at the Nürburgring.

The Type-R's confirmation came on the heels of another confirmed and related rumor that the European Civic five-door hatchback body style will be coming to the U.S. The sedan will launch first this fall, followed by the hatch and coupe.

As with all Honda concepts, we expect the production car to look very similar to this concept. Tone down the styling slightly, change the wheels, and give it real door mirrors and you're probably looking at the next Civic Coupe. We'll find out later this year.
