At a New York region press event for the 2016 Honda Pilot, Honda light truck and SUV manager James Jenkins revealed that sales of the all new 2016 Honda HR-V have been surprisingly strong. “The vehicle went on sale two weeks ago and we’ve already sold roughly 6,500 HR-Vs,” said Jenkins. “Our annual target of 70,000 will probably have to be adjusted upwards.”

To put that number in perspective, the Honda Fit, upon which the HR-V is based, sold 6,342 units for the month of May, and that is considered strong sales for the new subcompact. May sales of the all-new Fit were up 82 percent over the same month last year.

The HR-V also surpassed one of its subcompact crossover competitors, the Jeep Renegade. A total of 4,416 Renegade small crossovers were sold in May, though sales were likely affected by the hundreds of units FCA held last month to address issues with the nine-speed transmission.

The HR-V joins big brother CR-V, Motor Trend’s 2015 Sport Utility of the Year, and biggest brother, the all-new 2016 Pilot, to help Honda have one of the youngest lines of product offerings in the industry. New products usually equate to hot sales, and the company’s May sales results back this claim: American Honda Motor Co. sold 154,593 vehicles in May 2015, which is up 1.3 percent over last year and a new monthly record.
