Hyundai Considering Production Version of Santa Cruz Truck Concept

At the 2015 Detriot auto show, Hyundai showed off its Santa Cruz Crossover Truck Concept and reception for the segment-crossing, Subaru Brat-like vehicle was positive, the automaker's research and development chief Park Byung-cheol told Reuters. While that doesn't necessarily mean the Santa Cruz is getting the green light just yet, Hyundai said at the trucklet's debut that it has thoroughly researched this segment, and it believes there is a market among millennials.

Speaking to reporters earlier this week, Byung-cheol said the concept received a "good response" from the show. However, the R&D director also said there were many "hurdles" standing in the way of a production version, but wouldn't comment on any specifics.

Looking simply at the stats of the truck segment, some of the hurdles Byung-cheol may be referring to become a little more transparent. At the Santa Cruz's reveal in Detroit, Hyundai vice president of product planning Mark Dipko himself said that the truck market has dropped 5 percent in the last five years. Additionally, around 80 percent of consumers shopping for a new vehicle don't consider today's trucks, while just 7 percent of those who do buy trucks are under 30. But those last two facts might actually help the Santa Cruz, considering it's different from the rest of the segment with its unique looks and smaller size -- things that might appeal to a younger generation.

Throw in gas mileage estimated to be in the high 30s, 190 hp from its 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4, and its utility options thanks to the bed, and Hyundai may be on to something -- if it decides to give the Santa Cruz the green light.
