Shortly after our long-term 2015 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe arrived at the office, I embarked on an extended road trip. In fact, I drove the curvaceous R Coupe before its chaperone, Jonny Lieberman, who was participating in the 2014 Best Driver’s Car competition at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. During a 19-day stint behind the wheel, I racked up 3119 melodious miles.

Not even our now long-gone and beloved Pearl White 2013 Nissan GT-R Black Edition got as much attention as this Salsa Red 2015 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe did on the same trip from the Los Angeles Basin to the Rocky Mountains. Whether that attention was due to the seductive shape or the frightening noises emanating from the electronically controlled two-stage active exhaust system, the F-Type R Coupe received countless smiles, waves, and thumbs-ups. I felt like I was being chased by cellphone paparazzi.

Some spectators were frightened by the F-Type R Coupe’s roar. Despite warning parents with young children about the extreme decibels soon to be unleashed, the masses insisted on hearing the engine scream. Over the course of nearly three weeks, the exhaust note brought more than half a dozen children to tears, while several small dogs, some cats, and smaller mountain wildlife ran in fear. The F-Type R Coupe’s exhaust also startled an elderly gentleman in the car next to me as I revved the engine while waiting for the light to change.

When it wasn’t setting off car alarms or frightening children and animals, the F-Type R Coupe proved to be a perfect road trip companion. Belying its sports car physique, the cargo area easily swallowed a pair of carry-on suitcases, two duffle bags, two backpacks, and a small camera bag with room for smaller objects. There are even hooks behind the seats for transporting suits and dry cleaning.

The 2015 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe averaged 17.1 mpg over the 3119-mile trip. Approximately 1360 of those miles were from my current residence to my hometown and back, where the F-Type Coupe R achieved as high as 23.7 mpg on one leg of the trip. Another 70 miles consisted of rush hour traffic through Los Angeles and Orange Counties between home and the Motor Trend headquarters, while the remaining miles were acquired driving enthusiastically between four counties back home, including six different canyon routes with elevations as high as 7000 feet. The worst observed fuel economy was 12.2 mpg. Not bad for a 550-hp sports coupe with an EPA rating of 16/23 mpg city/highway.
