Potholes are an unavoidable and unfortunate reality for many drivers. They’re also damaging and expensive – it’s estimated that potholes are responsible for an estimated $4.3 billion in vehicle damage annually in the U.K. alone. JaguarLand Roveris launching an effort to minimize the damaging effects of these road hazards with new technology that not only detects potholes, but also shares the info with other drivers and city officials.

The first stage of the project doesn’t require a significant amount of new tech. JLR vehicles (like the Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport ) equipped with magnetic suspension systems have sensors that detect severe road imperfections and adjust accordingly. The automaker says those same sensors can process and share that data with others drivers using vehicle-to-vehicle technology. Additionally, the data can be shared with road and highway agencies to alert them of necessary road repairs.

JLR’s goal for the next phase is the ability to detect and avoid potholes altogether. The automaker says it will soon test out a stereo digital camera that can scan the road and detect potholes. If the pothole is severe enough, the system would either slow or stop the vehicle, allowing the driver to safely navigate around the hazard. Additionally, another camera could take snapshots of the pothole and send it to road agencies to better analyze and prepare for repairs.
