Jaguar has released a few details regarding its BMW 3 Series fighter at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show : the compact sedan will be called the Jaguar XE and it will be powered by the automaker’s new Ingenium engine family when it goes on sale next year.

Based on a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder configuration, the efficient Ingenium family of engines includes gas and diesel variants and can be installed longitudinally for rear-drive cars or transversely for all-wheel-drive applications, like in the Range Rover Evoque. Horsepower and torque ratings haven’t been released, but Jaguar touts the new engine family as being lightweight, low-friction, and produce low emissions. Other powertrains haven’t been confirmed, but we expect the automaker’s 340-hp 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 as an option. © Provided by MotorTrend

In addition to the new engine family, the new Jaguar XE will introduce the brand’s new advanced aluminum architecture that was first seen in the C-X17 crossover concept last year. Benefits of the new aluminum chassis include both lightness and strength, which should benefit performance, refinement and efficiency as well.

While the Jaguar XE will go on sale globally in 2015, the compact British sedan, which is regarded as critical to the brand’s survival, will go on sale in the U.S. in 2016.
