The 99th running of the Indy 500 began and finished with a bang. The race was decided in the final laps when Juan Pablo Montoya made a pass on 2014 IndyCar Series champion Will Power, and held the lead until the checkered flag. The win marks Montoya’s second Indy 500 victory, with his first secured 15 years ago in 2000.

Research

Montoya started the race from 15th position, but a collision with Simona de Silvestro under caution required a rear tire guard change. That caution was due to a crash on the first lap that took out Takuma Sato, Sage Karam, and Ryan Briscoe. Sato and Briscoe were able to rejoin the race, but sadly Karam’s race was done. The contact with de Silvestro required Montoya to make several trips to the pits, and at one point the Colombian racer was in 30th place. Montoya, who returned to IndyCar in 2014 after years of racing in NASCAR, was able to work his way to the front over the course of the race’s 200 laps.

When Ed Carpenter and Oriel Serva crashed halfway through the race, the resulting caution and restart helped Montoya make his way through the field. The final laps came down to Power, Montoya, and Scott Dixon -- who started from pole and led the most laps of the race -- swapping positions until Montoya took the lead and held on with four laps to go. With the win, Montoya holds the record for longest span between Indy 500 wins.

Though this is only Montoya’s fourth career IndyCar win, he’s no stranger to open-wheel racing. Montoya was the 1999 CART series champion, and won the 2003 Monaco Grand Prix at the wheel of a Williams F1 car. He finished 3rd in the Formula 1 drivers’ championship in 2002 and 2003.
