Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) might be the most interesting in-house upgrade outfit in the industry. First the team brought us the outrageous Range Rover Sport SVR, a delicious-sounding 5,000-pound behemoth that can scorch racetracks at up to 162 mph. SVO then developed even finer tastes, releasing the Range Rover SVAutobiography with over-the-top details like deployable tray tables and solid-aluminum coat hooks. This time, with the Range Rover Sentinel, it’s all about safety. Safety, that is, from high-velocity gunfire, explosives, and merciless melee attacks.

Based on the decked-out Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography model, the Range Rover Sentinel adds the no-nonsense security of an armored truck. Although it looks essentially identical to a standard Autobiography, the Range Rover Sentinel can fend off armor-piercing incendiary bullets, an explosion from up to 33 pounds of TNT, and DM51 grenade explosions from under and above the car. The extra protection comes from upgrades like a six-piece armored passenger cell made of high-strength steel, as well as bulletproof privacy glass. Land Rover says that the glass is of “optical quality,” ensuring that your driver can enjoy an “excellent clarity” view of the happenings outside while your Range Rover is being showered with round after round of high-caliber machine gun fire.

Other upgrades include a self-sealing fuel tank, an auxiliary backup battery with split charging system, anti-smash protective rear glass, and an emergency escape route aft of the rear seats. If meddlesome armed assailants shoot out your tires, special run-flat inserts will still let the Range Rover Sentinel speed away. Sensitive documents to deliver? Get down with your Soviet-spy self and enjoy the special narrow opening in the bulletproof driver’s window. There's also an escape hatch behind the rear seats in case the car's doors are blocked by enemies.

There have also been some slight changes to the Range Rover Sentinel’s internals, such as a retuned suspension and upgraded brake pads, to ensure that despite its extra heft, the Sentinel still drives like a Range Rover. Under the hood, a 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 continues to offer 340 hp through an 8-speed automatic transmission.

It should come as no great surprise that Land Rover SVO is expecting the Range Rover Sentinel to sell well in certain international markets like the Middle East and Africa. On sale now, it’s available in the U.K., Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and South America. Starting price is €400,000 ($447,700), but that sum does include a driver-training program to help you make the most of the armored SUV's abilities.
