In its annual Vehicle Dependability Study, J.D. Power once again gave top scores to Lexus, which was followed not too far behind by Buick.

Research

The study asked owners how many issues they have experienced with their vehicles after three years of ownership, meaning that all rankings are based on cars from the 2011 model year. The experts assigned each brand a number based on how many problems were reported per 100 vehicles, and Lexus was the clear winner at just 89 problems. Buick moved up three spots from last year with a score of 110, followed closely behind by Toyota, which went from eighth to third place this year at 111. Rounding out the top ten were Cadillac (114), Honda and Porsche (tied at 116), Lincoln (118), Mercedes-Benz (119), Scion (121), and Chevrolet (123).

Some of the most improved brands include Ram, Mitsubishi, and Scion, each moving up at least 10 spots in the rankings. Brands at the very bottom of the list include Jeep (197), Land Rover (258), and Fiat (273).

In individual car categories, Toyota and General Motors stole the show with some of the most dependable vehicles. The Toyota Corolla and Sienna; Scion xD, xB, and tC; and Lexus ES and GX earned the top scores in their respective segments. Meanwhile, GM vehicles that won in their individual segments include the Buick LaCrosse; GMC Terrain, Sierra LD, and Yukon; and Chevrolet Malibu, Silverado HD, and Camaro.

This year, consumers complained more about Bluetooth and voice-recognition technologies than any other aspect of their vehicles. There is evidence technology is becoming increasingly important to consumers as 15 percent reported they would avoid a car if it didn't feature the latest tech, compared to just 4 percent a year ago. Powertrain problems also remained high, with many of these consumers reporting rough shifting and hesitation in their automatic transmission cars.
