Lincoln Continental Prototype Spied Testing on the Streets

A heavily camouflaged prototype for a production Lincoln Continental has been spotted testing. In addition to the mule's size and proportions, a pair of LED headlights peeking through the camo gives this car away as the production version of the Continental concept.

Research

It seems clear the Continental will be based on the new Ford Taurus' stretched Fusion platform, which could be a disappointment to many Lincoln fans who were expecting rear-wheel drive. The 2016 Ford Taurus for the Chinese market made its debut in Shanghai, and you can expect that model's available reclining and massaging rear seats to make it to the Continental. The increased wheelbase of the new front-drive-based platform will grant more rear seat room.

While the Chinese-market Taurus gets a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6, the Continental will receive a Lincoln-exclusive 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 driving the front or all four wheels. Beneath the camo, the prototype likely keeps the majority of the concept's front end, as the car previews what's to come on all future Lincolns. The new grille, which looks like a mix of Jaguar, Kia, and Bentley design cues, is expected to appear throughout the Lincoln lineup. The concept's winglet-like door handles may or may not make it to production. We've heard that they might be replaced by a beltline-level handle using the same E-Latch technology that debuted on the concept.
